Peter Molony

Director, Facilities Management

University of Canterbury

Peter has been in his role at the University of Canterbury since 1997. Following his graduation from the Auckland University, School of Architecture in the late seventies he worked in London for a building consultancy for 3 years followed by 13 years with the Wellington Hospital Board as a hospital planner moving to the role of General Manger Facilities.

Peter’s responsibility at UC includes the full range of Capital Planning and Design responsibilities in addition to the facilities support services of engineering, maintenance, cleaning, security, timetabling, audio visual, mail, emergency management and car parking.

The University expanded in building size by some 25 per cent in the nineties and Peter’s role has been focussed on the utilisation of space and the reconfiguration of 40 yr +  old buildings to achieve a higher level of relevance to modern pedagogy.

The university faces the challenge of becoming environmentally sustainable in its core roles of teaching and research and in its operations. Facilities Management has the opportunity of leading many of the operational initiatives towards achieving sustainability.

Peter has been the University’s institutional representative since 1997 and is looking forward to putting some time back into TEFMA as recognition of the excellent resource to facilities managers that the organisation provides.
