Resources, Case Studies and Papers

Facilities management (FM) is the growth profession for all concerned with the management of premises and the assets within them. It represents a field of activity beyond the design, procurement and furnishing of buildings into the skills of managing the use of a facility and how it evolves and develops in response to the changing demands of the occupier. The growing awareness of environmental issues and the drive towards conservation and sustainability of resources emphasises the importance of effective facilities management for all those studying and working in the built environment. (Parks, 1998)

Resources and case studies are listed below to assist you to achieve an integrated management program that is consistent with ecological sustainable development.

Global University and Corporate Environmental Policies
The foundation document for a sustainable university is an Environmental Policy statement. The Environmental Policy demonstrates and drives the University/Institution's commitment to continual improvement in environmental performance.
An environmental policy should be unique to a University/Institution, however guidance can be obtained by viewing policies at the Global University and Corporate Environmental Policies' site.

Tips for implementing an EMS
An Environmental Management System is a framework to assist an organisation to implement the Environmental Policy. An EMS should invoke a continual cycle of planning, doing, reviewing and improving processes and actions associated with responsible environmental management. Address priority areas first and develop and implement action plans to mitigate these aspects. A useful tool is the Australian/New Zealand Standard for Environmental Management Systems, ISO 14001. Refer to the ISO 14001 standard but don't expect your system to be the neat linear process that the standard outlines.

The Global Environmental Management initiative at http://www.gemi.org features a "Sustainable Development Planner" that provides a performance basis. A mix of process and performance will provide the personalised system for your University/institution. The ESD matrix from this AAPPA website can be used to measure progress.

Global Reporting Initiative - a common framework for sustainability reporting
The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) is a multi-stakeholder process and independent institution whose mission is to develop and disseminate globally applicable Sustainability Reporting Guidelines. These Guidelines are for voluntary use by organisations for reporting on the economic, environmental, and social dimensions of their activities, products, and services. The GRI incorporates the active participation of representatives from business, accountancy, investment, environmental, human rights, research and labour organisations from around the world. A number of Australian organisations use GRI including Telstra, General Motors, Canon, Body Shop International, and ICI Chemicals.

Indicators for State of the Environment Reporting - Australia
Through State of the Environment Reporting a set of indicators has been developed that are relevant to Australian conditions.

Green Star Building Energy Rating Scheme
Green Star is a national voluntary rating system that evaluates environmental performance of buildings. The first pilot rating tool under this system is for the design phase of new construction or base building refurbishment of office buildings .

National House Energy Rating Scheme NatHERS
NatHERS is a computer simulation tool for house energy rating in Australia. The Australian designed software from CSIRO is designed for Australian conditions.

Australian Building Greenhouse Rating
Building managers, owners and tenants can self assess the greenhouse performance of their base building, whole building or tenancy at no cost using the Australian Building Greenhouse Performance Rating Calculator. Using 12 months of energy consumption (from bills) and some other details such as the number of people, number of computers, net lettable area and the hours of occupancy, you can obtain a star rating that indicates the greenhouse performance of your office building.

Australian Bureau of Statistics - select links to Theme, then Environment
The Australian Bureau of Statistics is Australia's official statistical organisation. They assist and encourage informed decision-making, research and discussion within governments and the community, by providing a high quality, objective and responsive national statistical service.

ESD Matrix
An ESD matrix has been designed to be used to help measure the progress towards sustainability. The matrix was used in the AAPPA Benchmark Survey, to analyse the result and report on the findings.
