Hong Kong Baptist University: Campus Environmental Sustainability Index

20 September, 2018

News Item submitted from Institutional Member, Hong Kong Baptist University

To create a low-carbon and environmentally sustainable campus, Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) developed the Hong Kong Baptist University Campus Environmental Sustainability Index (HKBU CESI) in July 2015, which aims to assess the overall institutional sustainability performance by integrating hardware and cultural elements.  HKBU CESI’s two sub-indices, Sustainable Culture Sub-index and Sustainable Facilities Sub-index, reflect cultural and hardware performance by measuring behaviour practised by different stakeholders of the University and hardware performance versus international, government and tertiary education standards, respectively.  Using HKBU CESI as a management tool enables HKBU to improve progressively on sustainability by presenting clear, comparable and meaningful sustainability performance. The Index is the first of this kind among the tertiary education institutions in Hong Kong. It can be broadly applicable to other tertiary education institutions and high schools both in local and overseas.
