Given Tasmania is largely powered by renewable energy sources, a significant reduction in the carbon footprint of this new building had to be achieved through the reduction of embodied carbon. An Ambitious sustainability agenda pushed the quantification and comparison of carbon in alternate materials and systems. In recognition that the structure of a building accounts for approximately 40% of its carbon footprint, a hybrid structure of timber, concrete and recycled steel pipeline as piles was adopted. A 30% reduction in up front carbon was achieved. In addition, the external envelope of the building utilises high-performance glass, sunshade devices, minimization of thermal bridging, and a continuous air-tightness membrane, and easily exceeds the minimum energy efficiency requirements of the National Construction Code 2019. The building is also designed for disassembly, and deep engagement with the Tasmanian industry identified opportunities for local procurement

Through various practical examples, participants will learn how effective material choices can reduce the upfront carbon associated with building projects.

Who should attend:

Anyone interested in a focus on the contribution of materials used in construction and refurbishment projects to greenhouse gas emissions and how collaborative processes between client, designers and builders can effectively deliver upfront carbon reductions.
