TEFMA 2020 Benchmark Insights publication

It gives me great pleasure to publish the TEFMA 2020 benchmark and insights publication with contextual narrative, based on analysis and trends of Australasian Higher Educational institutional performance across calendar year 2020.The report focusses on five headline key performance indicators, being the Built Environment, Sustainability, Capital Expenditure, Operational Expenditure and Space Utilisation.

While the annual TEFMA benchmark survey and reporting tool enables institutional members to trend data of interest, the TEFMA board saw an opportunity to provide further value for our members and the Higher Education sector by developing this new product in collaboration with Arup and Universities Australia.

The richness of this report should facilitate conversations and act as an important engagement tool for institutional members, governance structures, business partners, international partners, sector bodies and associations (in particular Universities Australia and Universities New Zealand) and various levels of government. We believe this publication demonstrates that TEFMA continues to provide unique sector insights and value for our members in addition to our other publications and professional development offerings. It strengthens our position as the primary advisory Association for higher education built environment professionals across Australia and Aotearoa / New Zealand.

This benchmark analysis publication is available only to members and is the first of what is intended to become be an annual deep dive into the rich data collated by institutions. We would love to hear your thoughts on the report and where we could take it to in the future.

On behalf of the Board, I wish to acknowledge the efforts and pass on my gratitude to the members of Universities Australia, Arup and all TEFMA members and institutions represented on the Special Interest Group who contributed to build this new product. I look forward to repeating the analytical review post the current 2021 data collection exercise and sharing the results at this years’ Tertiary Education Management Conference in Hobart (September 2022).

Happy reading,

Glenn Mowbray
TEFMA President
